The truth about the Israeli attacks on Lebanon
The recent prisoner exchange between Hezbollah and Israel has reopened the can of deception that the world witnessed two years ago.
An article on the Independent website, discussing the prisoner exchange began with the following:
‘The bodies of two Israeli soldiers whose abduction by Hezbollah triggered the 2006 Lebanon war were returned yesterday in a prisoner exchange ….’
The BBC began with:
‘The soldiers – Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser – are believed to have died when they were ambushed in 2006. The incident sparked a month-long war between Israel and Hezbollah…’
The western world is oblivious to facts when it comes to atrocities committed by Israel. Any act of aggression by Israel is quickly followed by a ‘disclaimer’ that seeks to justify its oppressive actions. As if it wasn’t drummed down enough in the minds of the public two years ago that the attack on Lebanon that killed thousands of innocents, was a retaliatory one sparked by the abduction, that we now have to hear the same bias subtly reinforced once again.
According to the western mindset, here’s how the story went:
On 25th June 2006, Gilat Shalit, an IDF corporal at the time was abducted by Hamas. Soon after, following a cross border raid by Hezbollah, two Israeli soldiers, Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser were ‘kidnapped’. Israel then retaliated with its attacks on Lebanon.
Few readers will be aware of the timeline of events leading up to the abduction of Gilat Shalit and even fewer will be reminded of them.
8th June 2006: the Israeli army assassinated the recently appointed Palestinian head of the security forces of the Interior Ministry, Jamal Abu Samhadana, and three others.
9th June 2006: Israeli shells killed seven members of the same family picnicking on Beit Lahiya beach. Some 32 others were wounded, including 13 children.
13th June 2006: an Israeli plane fired a missile into a busy Gaza City street, killing 11 people, including two children and two medics.
20th June 2006: the Israeli army killed three Palestinian children and injured 15 others in Gaza with a missile attack.
21st June 2006: the Israelis killed a 35-year old pregnant woman, her brother, and injured 11 others, including 6 children.
24th June 2006: the day before the “kidnapping”, Israeli commandos had entered the Gaza Strip and captured two Palestinians claimed by Israel to be members of Hamas.
Now some would inevitably argue that these events had nothing to do with Hezbollah, and it’s interference in what people like to see as a ‘Palestinian-Israeli conflict’ justified the attacks on Lebanon. Please note: Muslims don’t recognise boundaries between them and see themselves as one people. The Muslim populace is far better informed of Israel’s aggression and stands shoulder to shoulder with the Palestinian people. Why is it that the western governments can continue to arm and support the oppressive state of Israel whilst Hezbollah is not allowed to retaliate for the oppression against Palestinians?
The abduction of two Israeli soldiers was avenged by killing thousands of innocent civilians in Lebanon and this act is seen as justified. But what of the deaths of those Palesinians made refugees in their own land and killed unlawfully by the Israelis on a daily basis? Where is the reminder in the media that Palestinians who fight are trying to resist a brutal occupation?
I am certain that if the true series of events were reported since the creation of Israel and the illegitimacy of the Balfour Declaration, people would have a very different take on the State of Israel and the occupation we have learnt to call a ‘conflict’. But alas, this should come as no surprise as the function of the western media isn’t to report the truth, it is to serve those that fund it.
